U.S. Special Operations troops are forming elite counterterrorism units in four African countries (in North and West Africa). U.S. officials said these units  are pivotal in the widening war against Al Qaeda´s regional branches and affiliates and associates in Africa.

The secretive program, financed by classified Pentagon funds are carried out by trainers, including members of the Army’s Green Berets and Delta Force. The program started in 2013 to instruct and equip hundreds of handpicked commandos in Niger, LibyaMauritania and Mali.

The goal over the next few years is to build homegrown African counterterrorism teams capable of combating terrorist fighters.
